Crisis surrounding the arrival of Hapoel Be'er Sheva fans for a match in the Netherlands
Israel's Ambassador to the Netherlands, Modi Ephraim, has expressed deep concern following the local authorities' decision to ban Hapoel Be'er Sheva football fans from attending the upcoming match in Amsterdam. This is an unusual decision intended, according to the authorities, to maintain public order and ensure the safety of fans in the city.
Ambassador Ephraim described this step as a "grave precedent" and argued that it constitutes an infringement on the rights of Israeli fans. He stated that preventing fans from entering a sporting event solely due to their origin or affiliation with an Israeli team is an unacceptable action, and he is working with official Dutch representatives to try and reverse the decision.
The decision comes against the backdrop of security and political tensions in Europe in general, and in the Netherlands in particular, which often affect sporting events involving Israeli teams. Dutch authorities fear protests or violent clashes that could occur around the match, and therefore chose to prevent the fans' arrival as a precautionary measure.
The management of Hapoel Be'er Sheva also expressed great disappointment with the decision. The club stated that it is in constant contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to explore ways to ensure the fans' right to support their team safely.
Additional meetings between Israeli and Dutch representatives on this issue are expected to take place in the coming days. In the meantime, the team's fans are awaiting updates, with the central question remaining whether the parties will be able to reach an agreement that would allow the match to take place with an Israeli audience present.
