Ministry of Health warns: New guidelines for bathers in the Sea of Galilee and water sources
The Ministry of Health has recently published important guidelines for the public bathing in the Sea of Galilee and other freshwater sources. The guidelines follow the identification of a rare and dangerous amoeba in the water, which can cause severe illness if it enters the human body through the nose.
The amoeba, which lives naturally in freshwater, can reach the nervous system if contaminated water enters the nose. Therefore, the Ministry of Health recommends that the public exercise extra caution while bathing. The primary recommendation is to minimize the entry of water into the nose as much as possible while swimming.
To protect health, the Ministry advises bathers to avoid diving, jumping into the water, and activities where the head goes underwater. Furthermore, it is recommended to use a special nose clip while bathing to prevent water from entering this area.
Since 2022, several cases of infection with this amoeba have been diagnosed in Israel. Although these are rare cases, the Ministry of Health emphasizes that it is a very dangerous disease, and therefore it is important to adhere to the guidelines to maintain public health and enjoy bathing safely.
The public is requested to continue staying updated on the Ministry's guidelines via the official website. Following these safety rules will allow us all to spend the coming summer safely at the various water sources across the country.
