Data center boom in Italy: requests to the power grid grow by 48%
The Italian technology sector is experiencing a phase of unprecedented expansion. According to recent data provided by Terna, the company that manages the national power grid, connection requests for new data centers have increased by more than 48% in the first eight months of the year.
This increase reflects the growing need for digital infrastructure in the country, which is fundamental to supporting artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the digitalization of businesses. The construction of these facilities requires a significant amount of electricity, which is why dialogue with the grid operator has become a crucial step for investors.
From a geographical perspective, interest is not distributed uniformly across the national territory. The majority of connection requests are concentrated in three key regions: Lombardy, Lazio, and Piedmont. These areas currently represent the main strategic hubs for Italian technological development, thanks to the presence of already consolidated infrastructure and their proximity to major economic centers.
The rise in applications now poses new challenges for the Italian energy system, which must ensure a stable and sustainable supply to meet this growing demand. Authorities and industry operators are working to plan the investments necessary to upgrade the power grid, ensuring that the infrastructure is capable of supporting the country's digital transformation in the coming years.
