Wine sector crisis: sales decline in Italy
The Italian wine sector is facing a period of great difficulty. According to recent data, wine production in our country is currently higher than market demand, creating an excess of stock in cellars that is worrying national producers.
The figures for the first five months of the year show a significant decline across all categories. Wines with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) recorded a loss of 6%, while wines with a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) fell by more than 7%. The situation is even more complex for common wines, which suffered a contraction of 14.4%.
This imbalance between supply and demand has caused a decrease in sales prices, which in some cases have reached an average of 54 cents per liter. The drop in economic value puts pressure on agricultural businesses, which must contend with high production costs and a reduced ability to place their products on the market.
Industry experts are now analyzing the causes of this phenomenon, trying to understand whether it is a change in the consumption habits of Italians or a difficulty linked to exports. The challenge for the coming months will be to rebalance the market and support Italian wine excellence, a symbol of Made in Italy around the world.
