Prime Minister Meloni in Prague: a new axis to modify European environmental policies
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, paid an official visit to Prague to meet with the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala. At the center of the discussion between the two leaders was a shared desire to revise certain European Union policies, with particular attention to the ETS (Emission Trading System).
The ETS is a European tool that requires companies to pay for the carbon dioxide emissions they produce. According to the Italian and Czech governments, the current rules risk excessively penalizing national industries, making European products less competitive compared to those coming from non-European markets.
During the meeting, Meloni emphasized the need for a more pragmatic approach to the ecological transition. The goal of the Rome-Prague axis is to balance environmental protection with the defense of the production system and jobs, avoiding a situation where the costs of decarbonization fall entirely on businesses and citizens.
The dialogue between the two countries was not limited to the environmental issue. The prime ministers also discussed economic cooperation, energy security, and the management of migration flows, confirming their desire to strengthen bilateral relations within the European framework.
This visit marks an important step for Italy, which is seeking strategic allies to influence future decisions in Brussels. The Italian government intends to bring these proposals to the European Council table, seeking to find a meeting point between climate goals and the needs of the real economy.
