Social networks and democracy: the relationship of Italians with digital platforms
The role of social networks in modern society is at the center of a heated public debate. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X have radically changed the way people access news and interact with one another, raising important questions about their impact on the stability of democracy.
According to a recent analysis published by La Stampa, the relationship of Italians with these tools remains complex and contradictory. On one hand, social media is seen as a useful means to stay updated in real time on what is happening in the world. On the other hand, there is growing concern regarding the spread of unverified information and the risk of manipulating public opinion.
Despite these critical issues, the data show that the majority of Italians maintain a positive attitude toward the digital world. 54% of users in our country still consider social networks a valuable resource for the community, capable of offering new opportunities for discussion and social participation.
The issue of trust, however, remains a crucial point. Although many recognize the informative value of these platforms, there is a clear need for greater critical awareness on the part of users. The challenge for the future will be to balance digital freedom of expression with protection against the risks of disinformation, ensuring that social media can continue to be a space for healthy dialogue for democracy.
