Mission Airone: remembering the Italian commitment in Kurdistan
The Ministry of Defence recently commemorated an important chapter in Italian military and humanitarian history: the "Airone" mission. Launched in April 1991, this operation saw our country's involvement in Iraq, immediately following the conclusion of the Gulf War.
The main objective of the mission was to provide protection and assistance to the Kurdish population. At that time, thousands of civilians were fleeing towards northern Iraq to seek safety due to the serious tensions and conflicts that threatened their survival.
The Italian contingent operated on the ground to ensure essential humanitarian aid, demonstrating Italy's ability to intervene in complex international contexts. The mission represented a significant moment for diplomacy and for the commitment of the Italian armed forces in supporting refugees.
Today, more than thirty years later, the memory of the Airone mission remains an example of how Italy has actively contributed to stability and the protection of human rights in crisis areas. This historical event continues to be studied as an integral part of our country's collective memory regarding peacekeeping missions abroad.
