Smog in Lombardy: the economic and health impact worries citizens
The association "Cittadini per l'aria" (Citizens for Air) has filed a formal complaint with the Court of Auditors regarding the management of air pollution in Lombardy. The group denounces how air quality in the region has become a true emergency, not only for public health but also for the local economy.
According to data released by the organization, the presence of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air carries a very high social and economic cost. It is estimated that pollution accounts for 7.3% of the region's Gross Domestic Product, a figure that translates to approximately 3,360 euros per year for every inhabitant, including newborns.
The complaint points the finger at current policies, which are considered insufficient to combat the phenomenon. Citizens are calling on regional authorities to intervene with more effective measures to reduce harmful emissions, emphasizing that the cost of inaction is higher than what is necessary to implement a concrete ecological transition.
The issue raises an important debate on how local administrations should address the climate crisis. The health of citizens and economic stability are closely linked, making long-term planning necessary that prioritizes the quality of the air we breathe every day.
