Preference voting returns: the new features of the electoral law
After twenty-three years of absence, the Italian electoral system is reintroducing the preference vote. This modification represents a significant change for citizens, who will now have a more direct role in choosing their representatives within the institutions.
The preference voting mechanism allows voters to indicate not only the symbol of their chosen party but also the specific name of the candidate they wish to elect. In this way, the weight of the individual vote increases, reducing the exclusive discretion of party secretariats in the composition of candidate lists.
The new legislation establishes precise rules regarding blocked list leaders. While it will be possible to express a preference for the candidates following them on the list, the names placed at the top remain chosen directly by the political parties. This hybrid system aims to balance the need for party stability with the desire to give voters a greater voice.
The main objective of this reform is to bring citizens closer to politics by making the selection process for parliamentarians more transparent. Many experts point out that this new feature will require greater information on the part of voters, who will need to better understand the profiles of individual candidates before heading to the polls.
In the coming months, the Ministry of the Interior will launch information campaigns to correctly explain how to cast a vote. It will be essential for every citizen to understand how to use the ballot paper correctly to avoid having their vote annulled during the count.
