Milan Malpensa Airport has been officially named after Silvio Berlusconi
As of Friday, Milan Malpensa International Airport has officially changed its name. The Lombardy hub has been named after Silvio Berlusconi, the former Prime Minister and entrepreneur who passed away in June 2023.
The decision to dedicate the main airport in northern Italy to the founder of Mediaset has sparked a broad debate in the country. The measure was supported by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which approved the ordinance necessary to make the name change effective.
Malpensa Airport represents one of the most important logistical hubs for Italian air traffic, connecting Milan with numerous international destinations. With this new naming, the airport joins other Italian airports that bear the names of historical figures or illustrious personalities from the nation's culture and politics.
Despite the differing political opinions regarding the figure of Berlusconi, the bureaucratic process has been successfully completed. From today, passengers arriving at or departing from the Milanese hub will find the new sign commemorating the former political leader, marking a significant change for the identity of the main Lombardy airport.
