Identity cards: starting tomorrow, renewal becomes unlimited for those over 70
An important bureaucratic change comes into force in Italy starting tomorrow. The government has established that, for citizens over the age of 70, electronic identity cards will have unlimited validity upon renewal.
This measure was introduced to simplify the daily lives of elderly people, reducing the need to periodically visit municipal offices for administrative procedures. With this new regulation, once the renewal is carried out after the age of 70, the document will no longer need to be replaced due to expiration.
The Ministry of the Interior has clarified that the new rule applies exclusively to electronic identity cards. Interested citizens will be able to request the permanent document at their municipality of residence, bringing a recent photograph and paying the required issuance fees.
This bureaucratic simplification represents a step forward in the digitalization of public services in our country. The goal of the authorities is to make the relationship between citizens and the Public Administration faster and more efficient, eliminating unnecessary steps for the most vulnerable segments of the population.
Municipal authorities have already been informed of the procedure and are ready to handle requests starting tomorrow. It is still advisable to consult your municipality's website to check how to book an appointment, in order to avoid long waits at the counters.
