Milan Malpensa Airport has been named after Silvio Berlusconi
Milan Malpensa Airport has officially changed its name. As of today, Lombardy's main international hub is named after Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian entrepreneur and politician who passed away in June 2023.
The decision was received with great emotion by the former prime minister's family. Marina Berlusconi, daughter of the founder of Forza Italia, publicly expressed her pride, describing this choice as a significant tribute to her father's figure and his connection to the city of Milan and the business world.
The choice to dedicate the airport to Berlusconi has sparked a wide debate in the country. On one hand, supporters emphasize the importance of remembering a figure who shaped Italy's political and economic history over the last thirty years. On the other hand, various critical voices have raised doubts about the appropriateness of linking the name of such a divisive figure to a public infrastructure of this importance.
Despite the differing opinions, the bureaucratic process has concluded with the officialization of the new name. Malpensa Airport, which welcomes millions of passengers from all over the world every year, is therefore preparing to operate under this new designation, marking an important moment for Italy's collective memory.
