Electoral law: the Chamber approves new rules on preferences
The Chamber of Deputies has taken an important step toward reforming the voting system. During yesterday's session, Article 1 of the new electoral law was approved, introducing significant changes regarding how citizens express their preferences.
The measure incorporates several amendments previously discussed and approved in the Senate. The parliamentary debate focused in particular on the requirements necessary for submitting lists and on the rules that allow voters to choose their preferred candidates within the electoral lists.
These innovations aim to simplify certain bureaucratic procedures, such as the collection of signatures required for candidacy, while simultaneously ensuring greater transparency in the democratic process. Political forces have discussed at length how to balance territorial representation with the stability of the parliamentary system.
The legislative process is not yet complete. Following this vote in the Chamber, the text must return for final review to complete the parliamentary procedure. The government hopes that the reform can be approved quickly, so as to make the new rules operational for the next elections.
