Major seizure of exotic animals at the port of Pozzallo
An important operation against illegal animal trafficking concluded in recent days at the port of Pozzallo, in Sicily. Local authorities intercepted a vehicle transporting hundreds of specimens of protected species, likely destined for the black market for pets.
During routine checks, officers discovered 300 tortoises and 77 parrots inside the car. The animals were crammed in precarious conditions, inside inadequate containers that put their health and survival at serious risk during the journey.
The trafficking of exotic species is a serious crime that damages biodiversity and violates international regulations on the protection of wildlife. Law enforcement immediately seized the animals, which have been entrusted to specialized centers to receive the necessary veterinary care and to be constantly monitored.
Investigations are currently underway to identify those responsible for the transport and to reconstruct the criminal network that manages this illegal trade. The Pozzallo case once again highlights the importance of controls in Sicilian ports, which are critical hubs for the passage of goods and, unfortunately, also for illicit activities involving protected species.
