Migrants: Switzerland resumes transfers to Italy
Switzerland has officially announced the resumption of asylum seeker transfers to Italy. This decision comes after a suspension that lasted nearly four years and follows a course of action similar to the one recently adopted by Germany.
According to the new provisions, Swiss authorities will once again send migrants who do not fall under Swiss jurisdiction back to our country. This procedure is based on the Dublin Regulation, which establishes that the responsibility for examining an asylum application lies with the first European Union member state where the migrant arrived.
The Swiss government explained that the measure is necessary to better manage migratory flows and ensure compliance with European regulations. The suspension of transfers had been interrupted in 2020, largely due to the restrictions and logistical difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The news has sparked various discussions at the political level. While Switzerland emphasizes the importance of applying common rules for border control, Italian authorities will now have to manage a potential increase in the number of people to be received and processed in identification centers.
This decision marks a significant change in the management of the borders between the two countries. Further clarifications are expected in the coming weeks regarding the practical methods by which these transfers will be carried out and the impact they will have on the Italian reception system.
