The Italian Ambassador to Croatia remembers the victims of the Vergarolla massacre
The Italian Ambassador to Croatia, Paolo Trichilo, paid an official visit to Pula to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the Vergarolla tragedy. This event, which occurred on August 18, 1946, represents one of the most painful chapters in recent history for the Italian community in Istria.
The massacre was caused by the explosion of numerous war devices that had been left unattended on the beach of Vergarolla. The explosion caused the death of over one hundred people, including many children and families who were spending a day of rest by the sea. The event deeply affected the local population and accelerated the exodus of Italians from those lands.
During the ceremony, the authorities laid wreaths in memory of the victims, emphasizing the importance of keeping historical memory alive. The commemoration was a moment of shared reflection, aimed at honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in that tragic post-war period.
The ambassador's visit reaffirms Italy's commitment to cultivating dialogue and mutual respect with Croatia. Through the remembrance of these events, institutions work to build a future of peace, while maintaining an indissoluble bond with their historical roots and the suffering experienced by compatriots in Istria.
