Work in Italy: professional life expectancy is among the lowest in Europe
According to the most recent data released by the CNA, the expected duration of professional life in Italy will stand at 33 years in 2025. This figure places our country in second-to-last place in the entire European Union, surpassing only Romania.
The comparison with the European average highlights a significant gap. On average, a European citizen works for approximately 37.5 years, which is four and a half years more than an Italian worker. This data raises important questions about the structure of the national labor market and the dynamics that influence employment in the long term.
The reasons for this phenomenon are multiple and complex. Among the main factors affecting the duration of a professional career in Italy are the difficulties young people face in entering the workforce, career interruptions, and the dynamics related to the pension and social security system.
The CNA data represents an important signal for institutions and social partners. The challenge for the coming years will be to foster greater participation in the labor market, seeking to gradually align the duration of Italian professional life with the average standards of other European partners.
