New AI-powered speed cameras: increased monitoring on Italian roads
Road safety technology in Italy is about to take a major step forward. Recently, new models of speed cameras equipped with artificial intelligence have been introduced, designed to monitor driver behavior more precisely than traditional systems.
These new devices do not just measure vehicle speed. Thanks to advanced sensors and visual analysis software, they are able to observe what happens inside the vehicle cabin. The main objective is to detect infractions such as the use of a mobile phone while driving or the failure to use seat belts.
The operation is based on the immediate processing of images. When a car passes in front of the camera, the system analyzes the driver's position and identifies any dangerous behavior. If an irregularity is detected, the device takes a photograph which is then sent to the competent authorities for verification and potential sanctioning.
The introduction of this technology, however, raises some questions regarding citizens' privacy. The authorities have assured that the data collected will be processed in full compliance with current regulations, focusing exclusively on road safety and the prevention of accidents caused by distraction.
The installation of these new tools will begin in the coming months in several Italian cities, with particular attention to the busiest roads. The Ministry of Transport's goal is to drastically reduce the number of serious accidents by encouraging drivers to maintain more responsible conduct behind the wheel.
