Black carbon: the invisible pollutant threatening health in Italy
A new health alert concerns air quality in Italian cities. At the center of attention is so-called "black carbon," a pollutant often less well-known than carbon dioxide but extremely dangerous to human health. Experts define it as an "invisible killer" due to its ability to penetrate deep into our bodies.
Black carbon should not be confused with common CO₂ or the coal used in power plants. Specifically, it is a component of fine particulate matter generated through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and biomass. In Italy, the main sources of this substance are diesel engines, wood-burning domestic heating, and certain industrial activities.
The danger of this pollutant lies in its microscopic size. Once released into the atmosphere, black carbon can be easily inhaled, reaching the lungs and the circulatory system. Several scientific studies have linked prolonged exposure to these particles to an increased risk of respiratory diseases, heart problems, and other chronic conditions affecting the urban population.
In addition to health risks, black carbon also has a significant impact on the climate. Being a dark substance, it absorbs sunlight and contributes to atmospheric warming. Its presence is therefore a central issue for Italian environmental policies, which seek to balance the need for mobility and heating with the protection of air quality in metropolitan areas.
In conclusion, the fight against black carbon represents a complex challenge for institutions and citizens alike. Reducing the use of obsolete diesel vehicles and improving the efficiency of heating systems are fundamental steps to limit the spread of this pollutant. Public awareness of this issue is the first necessary step toward improving the quality of the air we breathe every day.
