Rider strike in Milan and Bologna: the demand for greater safety against the heat
Riders working for major home delivery platforms, such as Glovo, Deliveroo, and Just Eat, have called a strike in the cities of Milan and Bologna. The protest stems from the need to safeguard workers' health during days characterized by extreme temperatures.
The unions representing the workers are asking companies to ban deliveries during the hottest hours of the day. This measure is considered essential to protect riders from the risk of heatstroke and other health problems linked to the heatwaves that regularly affect Italian territory during the summer.
In addition to safety, the workers' request also includes a guarantee of wage maintenance. The unions emphasize that the suspension of service during critical hours must not lead to a reduction in daily pay, thus calling for a concrete commitment from the platforms to protect the income of those who perform this work.
The mobilization highlights the issue of workplace safety for workers in the so-called 'gig economy.' The unions hope that this protest can open a discussion table with the companies to define clearer and safer rules for all couriers operating in Italian cities.
