More work for nurses: a study reveals risks to patient safety
A recent study conducted in Italy has highlighted a direct correlation between the workload of nursing staff and the safety of hospitalized patients. The research, which involved 25 hospitals and analyzed data from over 21,000 patients, confirms that when nurses have to manage too many patients simultaneously, the quality of care decreases significantly.
According to the published results, increased responsibilities and heavy shifts lead to a higher probability of clinical errors. Among the most serious consequences identified by the study are accidental patient falls, the development of pressure injuries, and, in the most critical cases, an increase in the mortality rate within healthcare facilities.
The report emphasizes that staff shortages are a structural problem that puts pressure on the entire national healthcare system. When the nurse-to-patient ratio is inadequate, the time dedicated to each individual is reduced, making it more difficult to constantly monitor the health status of those who are hospitalized.
The experts who participated in the research highlight the need to revise work organization in Italian hospitals. Ensuring a sufficient number of nurses per ward is not only a protection for workers, but represents a fundamental condition for ensuring safe and effective care for all citizens.
