Tragedy on the A44 highway in Germany: three dead and 11 injured in a series of accidents
The German A44 motorway witnessed a series of fatal accidents on Friday morning in North Rhine-Westphalia, resulting in the death of three people and at least 11 others injured. The accidents occurred near Paderborn under dangerous icy conditions.
The first main incident involved a truck and a semi-trailer loaded with paper. The trailer caught fire, and rescuers were unable to save the truck driver, who died at the scene. The trailer driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.
The police reported that within a short period, 18 accidents occurred, many of which resulted in personal injuries and material damage. Among these incidents, another collision led to the deaths of at least two additional people.
Black ice contributed to a pile-up of accidents in both directions on the A44. Authorities closed the affected section between the Marzberg and Leichtenaus junctions while emergency teams managed the site and cleared the debris.
Drivers are warned to exercise the utmost caution on icy roads, especially in the common winter conditions in the area. Investigations into the incidents are still ongoing, and the police are reviewing safety procedures to prevent further tragedies.
