SPD leads slightly over the Social Democratic Party: a direct competition in Rhineland

Just ten days before the state election in Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate), a new poll shows a tight race between the Christlich Demokratische Union (CDU – Christian Democratic Union) and the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD – Social Democratic Party of Germany).

According to a survey conducted by the Infratest dimap institute for ARD, the CDU led by گوردون شنایدر currently stands at 29 percent, gaining one percentage point compared to a February poll. The SPD of Prime Minister الکساندر شوایتزر follows closely with 28 percent, also increasing by one point.

The Alternative für Deutschland (AfD – Alternative for Germany) holds third place with 19 percent, unchanged from previous polling. The Bündnis 90/Die Grünen (The Greens) lost one percentage point and now stand at 8 percent, while Die Linke (The Left Party) remains at 5 percent. The Left Party has never previously entered the state parliament in Mainz, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Other parties are struggling to reach the required five-percent threshold needed for parliamentary representation. The Freie Wähler (Free Voters) received 4.5 percent in the survey, meaning they would narrowly miss entry into parliament. Combined support for other smaller parties, including the Freie Demokratische Partei (FDP – Free Democratic Party) and the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW – Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance), stands at about 6.5 percent.

The poll surveyed 1,534 eligible voters between Monday and Wednesday. When participants were asked who they would directly choose as prime minister, 38 percent supported الکساندر شوایتزر, while 21 percent favored گوردون شنایدر.

Voters in Rhineland-Palatinate will elect a new state parliament next Sunday. The region is currently governed by a so-called Ampel-Koalition (Traffic-Light Coalition) consisting of the SPD, Greens, and FDP under the leadership of الکساندر شوایتزر.
