Greece stops receiving North African refugees!
The Greek government, led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced a temporary suspension of asylum applications from migrants coming from North Africa for a period of three months. This decision comes in response to the significant increase in the number of refugees, especially on the island of Crete, where local authorities have become unable to cope with the ongoing influx.
Mitsotakis clarified in Athens that the aim of this step is to alleviate pressure on the national asylum system and to seek a common European solution to the migration problem.
This announcement came after the sudden cancellation of a meeting that was scheduled to be held in Benghazi, Libya, to discuss enhancing cooperation between the European Union and Libya in the field of migration.
The European Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, was scheduled to attend the meeting, along with representatives from Greece, Italy, and Malta.
However, the authorities in eastern Libya unexpectedly canceled the meeting, raising questions about the possibility of continuing cooperation with Libya in combating human trafficking.
