Red warning for several areas in Austria: cold and storms coming for several days
Severe thunderstorms hit the Austrian capital Vienna on Thursday afternoon after temperatures rose to 37 degrees Celsius. Meteorologist Manuel Oberhofer from ORF announced that a cold front was moving quickly towards the city accompanied by strong northwesterly winds, which occurred at 5 PM, as dark clouds gathered over Vienna.
The "Kachelmannwetter" service has issued a warning due to storms, indicating the approach of heavy rain and strong storms sometimes accompanied by hail, which will end the intense heat wave. The weather disaster warning authority "UWZ" has also issued a red alert for several regions in Austria due to severe hailstorms.
According to forecasts, Friday will see rain and storms from the morning along the northern side of the Alps and in the northeast, then extending south during the day. The most stable areas will be between Kärnten and Südburgenland, where the sun will shine longer, but even there the risk of storms will increase in the afternoon. In contrast, sunny weather will return to the west and north, with moderate to strong northwesterly winds in the east.
On Saturday, the weather will be variable between sun and clouds in the plains and hills, while heavy rain and storms are expected in the mountainous areas in the afternoon, with generally light winds, except in the east where they blow from the southeast at a moderate rate.
Sunday starts with stable weather, but storms quickly form in the west in the morning, extending to all mountainous areas by noon, then reaching the eastern parts in the afternoon and evening, increasing the local storm risk again. The chances of rain are lower in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel regions. Light to moderate southwesterly winds will become strong from the west in the evening north of the Alps.
