Russia conducts bombing exercises in the Northern Territories; Japanese government lodges strong protest
The Russian government notified Japan that it would conduct bombing exercises on Etorofu Island in the Northern Territories from the 13th to the 17th of this month. In response, the Japanese government has lodged a strong protest with the Russian side.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi addressed the exercises during a press conference. In his remarks, he stated, "The strengthening of military capabilities by Russia in the four Northern Islands is incompatible with Japan's position and is unacceptable," strongly condemning the actions taken by Russia.
The Northern Territories are an inherent part of Japanese territory, but they remain under Russia's effective control. The Japanese government has repeatedly protested against the expansion of Russia's military activities in the four Northern Islands through diplomatic channels.
As these exercises are taking place while Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues, security concerns within Japan are mounting. The Japanese government intends to continue monitoring Russia's movements closely and maintaining a firm response.
