Rakuten Symphony Makes Full-Scale Entry into Japanese Market: Aiming to Transform Telecommunications Infrastructure with Domestic Virtualization Technology
Rakuten Symphony, a subsidiary of Rakuten Mobile, has established a new organization, "Rakuten Symphony Japan," to strengthen its operations within Japan. While the company has previously focused on selling communication technologies developed by Rakuten Mobile to overseas telecommunications carriers, it now plans to focus its efforts in earnest on the domestic Japanese market.
Rakuten Symphony's greatest asset is its "fully virtualized network" technology, which Rakuten Mobile was the first in the world to achieve. This system operates communication networks using general-purpose servers and software rather than traditional specialized hardware. Implementing this technology makes it possible to significantly reduce both the construction and operational costs of telecommunications infrastructure.
Through the establishment of this new organization, the company will provide its "Made in Japan" virtualization platform to domestic companies and local governments. Specifically, it aims to enhance competitiveness within the Japanese telecommunications industry by proposing flexible system construction that utilizes open-source software (OSS). This is expected to allow companies to own their own communication networks more freely and at a lower cost.
Currently, the adoption of 5G and corporate digital transformation (DX) are progressing rapidly in Japan. As Rakuten Symphony ramps up its presence in the Japanese market, all eyes are on whether domestic telecommunications infrastructure will evolve into a more efficient and sophisticated system.
