Northern Territories display corrected on 'Equal Earth' projection map
The display of the Northern Territories has been corrected on a globally used map service. Previously, the map depicted the Northern Territories in the same color as Russian territory, but it has now been changed to the same color as Japanese territory.
This map was created using the "Equal Earth" projection method. The operating company changed the Northern Territories to the same color as Japanese territory on its English-language map. Additionally, the place names have been updated to use Japanese Romanized spelling.
On the other hand, no changes have been made to the Russian-language version of this map. According to the operating company, there is a policy to display regions with territorial disputes in a "light gray" color, which is different from any specific country.
This correction is believed to have been made following feedback from the Japanese government. The display of territories on international map services is garnering attention as an important issue that reflects the positions of various countries.
