Recruiting Overseas IT and AI Talent: The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Internship Program Gains Attention
The Japan Association of New Economy (JANE) held a business seminar focused on acquiring overseas science and engineering talent active in fields such as IT, AI, and semiconductors. The seminar provided a detailed explanation of how to utilize the "Global South – Japan Tech Talent Internship Program" implemented by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Currently, the shortage of IT engineers is a major challenge within Japan. In fields involving cutting-edge technologies like AI and semiconductors in particular, there is a global competition for top-tier talent. Consequently, how Japanese companies can recruit outstanding overseas students and engineers to work in Japan has become a critical theme.
This program aims to connect young talent from emerging countries—collectively known as the Global South—with Japanese companies. Through these internships, overseas students can learn about Japanese corporate culture, while companies can meet individuals who could become immediate assets in the future. The seminar also showcased case studies of companies that have successfully utilized this system.
JANE stated that it will continue to disseminate accurate knowledge regarding IT and e-business, as well as engage in activities that contribute to policy decision-making. For Japanese companies to maintain their global competitiveness, the acquisition and utilization of talent across borders will likely become increasingly important.
