Chinese research vessel conducts long-term survey in Japan's EEZ near the Senkaku Islands
The Japanese government has revealed that a Chinese marine research vessel conducted long-term survey activities within Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) west of the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture between March and July of this year. This area covers a vast expanse measuring approximately 66 kilometers from north to south and 11 kilometers from east to west.
The research vessel navigated the area in a fence-like pattern, repeatedly conducting surveys. The Japanese government has strongly protested to the Chinese side regarding these activities, which were carried out without prior consent. Furthermore, Japan has demanded an immediate halt to the activities, stating that they are not based on international law.
In recent years, incursions into territorial waters and navigation through contiguous zones by Chinese government vessels have become routine around the Senkaku Islands. This latest survey activity was more organized and extensive than previous incidents, leading the Japanese government to heighten its vigilance.
The Japan Coast Guard has increased the number of patrol vessels in the vicinity and is maintaining 24-hour surveillance. The Japanese government intends to continue lodging stern protests with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels while coordinating with relevant ministries and agencies to ensure a comprehensive posture for protecting Japan's territory and territorial waters.
