Cross-party group of lawmakers on peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait holds its first meeting
The cross-party study group "Parliamentarians for Peace and Stability in the Taiwan Strait," established in June, held its first meeting at the National Diet on the 13th. The group was formed to bring together Japanese lawmakers to discuss the current situation and peace in the Taiwan Strait.
At this meeting, a shared recognition was reached that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are of vital importance to Japan. Participating lawmakers exchanged views on what role Japan should play amidst the changing regional security environment.
Furthermore, the meeting included a discussion on moves to restrict freedom of speech. The attending lawmakers expressed a strong stance against the suppression of speech and emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values.
Moving forward, the group plans to hold regular study sessions and deepen specific discussions on maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait while hearing from experts. Attention is now focused on what actions the Diet can take regarding Japan-Taiwan relations and regional stability.
