Takeda's New Sleep Medication 'Dayvigo' Set for Approval in Japan
Takeda Pharmaceutical's new sleep medication, "Dayvigo tablets (generic name: lemborexant)," is expected to be listed on Japan's national health insurance price list on October 14, 2026. This drug is garnering attention as a next-generation treatment created at Takeda's research facilities in Japan.
Dayvigo is a new type of medication that acts on the "orexin 2 receptor" in the brain. It works through a different mechanism than previous sleep aids and is expected to support natural sleep. In particular, the addition of a new option for Japanese patients represents a significant advancement in the treatment of sleep disorders.
According to documents submitted to the Central Social Insurance Medical Council (Chuikyo) of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the drug's peak annual sales in Japan are projected to reach 7 billion yen. It is anticipated that many patients will see an improvement in their sleep quality through the use of this medication.
This approval may serve as a catalyst for drugs developed by Japanese pharmaceutical companies in their own domestic laboratories to once again garner global attention. Many experts are looking forward to seeing how Dayvigo will be utilized in Japanese medical settings moving forward.
