Foreign Minister Motegi holds telephone talks with ICC President Akane
On the evening of the 10th, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi held a telephone conversation with Tomoko Akane, President of the International Criminal Court (ICC). During the meeting, they exchanged views regarding the sanctions against the ICC announced by the U.S. government.
The ICC is an international institution that adjudicates war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other offenses. Currently, the U.S. government has expressed strong concerns regarding specific investigations being conducted by the ICC and has announced stringent measures, including sanctions against individuals involved. The Japanese government is closely monitoring the situation.
During the talks, Foreign Minister Motegi reiterated Japan's position of placing importance on the international rule of law. While affirming the importance of the ICC, it is believed that they also discussed the issues that the U.S. has identified as problematic.
Japan has consistently shown its support for the ICC for the sake of peace and stability in the international community. Through this telephone conversation, the Japanese government intends to seek a resolution to the tensions between the U.S. and the ICC through calm dialogue.
