Plant-based foods are now cheaper than animal products in Dutch supermarkets

A major shift is taking place in the Dutch food market. According to a recent study, plant-based alternatives are now cheaper than their animal-based counterparts, such as meat and dairy, across all nine major supermarket chains.

The study examined six key food categories consumed on a daily basis. The results showed that, on average, plant-based foods are 18% cheaper than animal-based products. This trend is believed to be driven by an increasing number of consumers choosing plant-based options due to environmental concerns and a growing interest in health.

Looking at the price differences by supermarket, the store "Plus" stood out, with plant-based products priced 30% lower than animal-based ones. Similarly, prices were 28% lower at "Dirk" and 24% lower at "Lidl," making plant-based foods a more affordable choice at many retailers.

In the past, plant-based foods were often more expensive than animal products. However, this survey indicates that in the Netherlands, plant-based food is no longer a niche item but is becoming an established, budget-friendly, and everyday option.

This price reversal may attract attention in other countries as well. The ability to maintain an environmentally friendly diet at an affordable price is a significant benefit for many consumers.
