Maritime Self-Defense Force's "P-1" Patrol Aircraft Continues to See Low Operational Rates

It has been revealed that there are issues with the operational status of the Maritime Self-Defense Force's "P-1" patrol aircraft, which are tasked with surveillance and monitoring in the waters surrounding Japan. Currently, only about 20% to 30% of the total fleet is capable of performing missions.

The P-1 patrol aircraft plays a vital role in protecting Japan's security. However, an investigation by the Board of Audit last year had already pointed out the low operational status of the aircraft. Even now, some time later, the operational rate has not improved and remains at a low level.

Experts have raised concerns that the maintenance of the aircraft and the procurement of parts may be taking too much time. Continuing to monitor a wide range of waters with a limited number of aircraft places a significant burden on personnel in the field.

The Ministry of Defense is being urged to take urgent measures on how to improve the operational rate in the future. To maintain Japan's national security, it is essential to establish a system where the necessary aircraft are ready for duty at all times.
