Taiwan Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao visits Italy, emphasizes the importance of democracy
Taiwanese Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao has visited the Italian island of Ventotene. Vice President Hsiao arrived at the location to attend a conference on democracy held on the island.
Ventotene is known as a place of great historical significance. In 1941, during World War II, political prisoners who opposed fascism drafted the "Ventotene Manifesto," which aimed for peace and unity in Europe. This manifesto is said to have laid the foundation for the ideals of the modern-day European Union (EU).
At this conference, participants from around the world will gather to discuss the values of democracy and the maintenance of peace. In recent years, Taiwan has increased its presence in the international community as a partner in democracy, and this visit is being noted as a part of that trend.
For Japan, Taiwan is a geographically close region with which it maintains a very important relationship in terms of economy and culture. Future developments will be watched closely to see how Taiwan's diplomatic activities are perceived by the international community.
Vice President Hsiao's visit to Italy serves as an opportunity to deepen ties with countries that share the common values of democracy. Amidst a changing international landscape, there continues to be significant interest in the role that Taiwan will play moving forward.
