Papua New Guinea to Close Taiwan Representative Office; Taiwan Government Strongly Objects
The government of the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea announced on the 15th that it will close the "Trade Mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan)" in the country. The representative office serves as a vital institution, fulfilling a role similar to an embassy in countries that do not have formal diplomatic relations.
In response to this decision, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the 16th expressing strong protest. The Taiwanese side asserts that the unilateral decision by Papua New Guinea is unacceptable.
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified its policy to continue operations in the country despite the announcement of the closure. Moving forward, the Taiwanese government intends to continue negotiations with the Papua New Guinean side, aiming to maintain the functions of the representative office.
This development once again highlights the increasingly complex international situation surrounding diplomatic relations between China and Taiwan. As the Pacific region is also an important partner for Japan, attention is focused on how the relationship between the two countries will evolve.
