LDP to Reappoint Itsunori Onodera as Tax System Research Commission Chairman
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) solidified its plan on the 20th to retain Itsunori Onodera (66) in his current position as chairman of the party's Tax System Research Commission. This decision was reached after Policy Research Council Chairman Kobayashi consulted with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba (LDP President), and Mr. Onodera himself has accepted the appointment.
The chairman of the Tax System Research Commission plays a vital role in determining Japan's tax regulations. In particular, the position is responsible for consolidating and coordinating internal party opinions on difficult issues, such as future economic measures and whether to implement tax cuts on items like food products.
Currently, Japan is experiencing persistent price increases, raising concerns about the impact on the lives of citizens. As a result, significant attention is focused on Mr. Onodera's ability to navigate how the tax system should be reformed.
Moving forward, the government and the ruling party plan to begin full-scale discussions on next fiscal year's tax reforms toward the end of the year. Mr. Onodera will continue to serve as the "coordinator," leading internal party discussions to finalize the new tax policy.
