China Announces Sanctions Against Belize and Paraguay Ministers Over Ties to Taiwan
The Chinese government announced sanctions on the 12th against ministers from Belize in Central America and Paraguay in South America, which include the freezing of their assets within China. These sanctions are seen as a retaliatory measure against both countries for maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
Those targeted by the sanctions include Belizean Foreign Minister Fonseca and others. The Chinese side cited as the reason for these measures that these individuals have deepened relations with Taiwan and taken actions that harm China's interests. China upholds the "One China" principle and has demonstrated a firm stance against countries that maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
In response, Belizean Foreign Minister Fonseca emphasized in an interview that his determination to support Taiwan remains unshaken despite the sanctions from China. He stated that his country would not change its diplomatic policy due to pressure from other nations.
This move has once again highlighted the international tensions surrounding Taiwan. For Japan, the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait are matters of significant concern, and future shifts in the international situation are being closely watched.
