Penalties for Desecrating the National Flag: New Law Enforced
A new law has been enforced in Japan that punishes acts of intentionally damaging or defiling the national flag. This law aims to maintain respect for the Japanese flag and preserve social order.
Under the new law, it is prohibited to destroy, remove, or defile the national flag in public in a way that "causes significant discomfort or aversion to others." Anyone who commits such acts will be subject to imprisonment for up to two years or a fine of up to 200,000 yen.
During deliberations in the Diet, concerns were raised that this law might restrict freedom of expression. However, the necessity of protecting the dignity of the national flag was ultimately prioritized, and the bill was passed.
With the enforcement of this law, greater caution will be required when handling the national flag in the future. As the flag is a symbol of the nation, each citizen is expected to treat it with appropriate respect.
