LDP's Keiji Furuya and others visit Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of defense cooperation
A group of 27 lawmakers, including Keiji Furuya of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is visiting Taiwan for a three-day trip starting October 9. The primary purpose of this visit is to participate in the celebration ceremony for Taiwan's National Day, known as "Double Tenth Day."
During the visit, Mr. Furuya touched upon defense cooperation with Taiwan. In particular, he emphasized the importance of cooperation in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and expressed the view that Japan and Taiwan need to advance discussions regarding defense.
In recent years, as the security environment in East Asia has changed, the collaboration between Japan and Taiwan has drawn attention. This visit by the parliamentary group is seen as an effort to deepen friendly relations between Japan and Taiwan while strengthening dialogue on security matters.
Taiwan has also expressed its welcome regarding this visit. Attention will be focused on future developments as to how Japan and Taiwan will build a cooperative relationship not only in economy and culture but also toward regional stability.
