Promoting the Use of 'Family Pharmacies': The Future of Healthcare as Envisioned by the Japan Pharmaceutical Association
Susumu Iwatsuki, President of the Japan Pharmaceutical Association, emphasized the importance of "family pharmacies"—places where patients can manage their health in their own neighborhoods—as the future model for pharmacies. Currently, approximately 90% of pharmacies nationwide are prepared to accept electronic prescriptions, and the development of a medical system utilizing digital technology is progressing.
With the introduction of electronic prescriptions, patients will be able to accurately share their medication history with doctors and pharmacists. This will allow for the verification of drug interactions and the prevention of duplicate prescriptions, enabling safer and more efficient treatment. The government is also supporting this initiative, accelerating the digital transformation (DX) of the medical field.
Furthermore, President Iwatsuki touched upon the importance of spreading the awareness among the public that "you must protect your own health." By utilizing Personal Health Records (PHR), he encourages patients to track changes in their own physical condition and to use pharmacies as a regular point of contact for health consultations.
Moving forward, pharmacies are expected to serve not only as places to pick up medication but also as hubs that support the health of local residents. The Japan Pharmaceutical Association intends to continue advancing digitalization while aiming to create an environment that can provide medical services tailored to each individual patient.
