From Okinawa to the World: Youth Leadership Supporting Africa’s Future
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with Okinawa Prefecture, is advancing a new initiative aimed at development and peacebuilding in Africa. This project values “ownership,” where African nations carve out their own futures, alongside international partnerships.
Okinawa has historically been a place that cherishes peace, and its experience is garnering attention as a model for conflict resolution and peacebuilding around the world. Through this collaboration, the initiative leverages Okinawa’s expertise to provide opportunities for African youth to learn leadership skills for solving social issues.
Specifically, the program focuses on “youth innovation,” where young people transform society with new ideas. By having African youth visit Okinawa or engage through online exchanges, they are sharing technologies and mindsets for building a sustainable society.
This initiative is not merely about aid; it aims for Japanese and African youth to learn from one another and build the future together. It is hoped that this small exchange, which began in Okinawa, will contribute significantly to global peace and development in the future.
