Turning Climate Change into a Growth Opportunity: Health and Global Policy Institute Proposes New Strategy
On June 24, the Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) released a new policy proposal regarding the impact of climate change on human health and the economy. This proposal aims to transform activities to protect the global environment into a "major opportunity" for Japan's economic growth and the protection of public health, rather than viewing them merely as a burden.
The climate crisis is intensifying worldwide, with rising temperatures and extreme weather events negatively affecting our lives. HGPI argues that to solve this problem, the concept of "Planetary Health," which integrates environmental measures with healthcare and economic policies, is essential.
Specifically, the institute is calling for this new strategy to be incorporated into key government guidelines such as the "Basic Policies for Economic and Fiscal Management and Reform." The goal is to foster new industries and, consequently, revitalize the Japanese economy by promoting the development of eco-friendly technologies and the creation of healthy living environments.
Many members, including medical professionals and policy experts, participated in this proposal. They emphasize that by taking a global lead in this field, Japan can build a sustainable society while protecting the global environment.
Attention is now focused on how the government will reflect this proposal in its policies. Future discussions are anticipated regarding how climate change countermeasures will transform our health and the economy of the future.
