How many cups of coffee a day? The latest standards from the American Heart Association and guidelines in Japan
The American Heart Association (AHA) has released a latest statement indicating that for healthy adults, a caffeine intake of up to 400mg per day is safe. This is equivalent to approximately five standard cups of coffee (about 240ml each). This announcement is based on the understanding that moderate caffeine consumption does not significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
On the other hand, in Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Food Safety Commission suggest that it is desirable to keep coffee consumption to a guideline of "about 3 to 4 cups per day." This difference in figures is due to considerations such as differences in physical build, sensitivity to caffeine, and variations in coffee strength and brewing methods.
There are individual differences in caffeine intake, and depending on one's constitution, some people may experience palpitations, insomnia, or stomach discomfort even with small amounts. Especially for those who are pregnant or sensitive to caffeine, it is important not to apply the U.S. or Japanese standards blindly, but rather to adjust the amount according to your own physical condition.
While coffee is a beverage that can help maintain health when enjoyed appropriately, caution is needed to avoid overconsumption. It is recommended to cultivate the habit of enjoying a moderate amount while consulting with your own physical condition in your daily life.
