Protecting the Health of the Planet and Its People: Japan's New Strategic Vision
On June 24, 2026, the Health and Global Policy Institute announced a new policy proposal aimed at simultaneously safeguarding the global environment and human health. This proposal presents a fresh perspective, suggesting that climate change should not be viewed merely as a crisis, but as an "opportunity" to foster improvements in both health and economic growth.
Currently, the health impacts of climate change are a growing concern worldwide. The proposal points out that the degradation of planetary health directly threatens human well-being. Consequently, it argues that environmental protection efforts should be positioned as essential investments for safeguarding the health of society as a whole.
Specifically, the proposal suggests that Japan should actively adopt the concept of "Planetary Health." This approach treats the Earth's ecosystem and human health as an inseparable, unified system that must be managed and protected together. By promoting this strategy, the aim is to achieve both the resolution of environmental issues and the revitalization of the economy.
Developed in collaboration with research institutions such as Hiroshima University, this proposal outlines the direction Japan should take in addressing environmental issues moving forward. All eyes are now on how the government and private sector will implement this strategy.
