Connecting Overseas IT and AI Talent with Japanese Companies: METI's Internship Program Gains Attention

The Japan Association of New Economy (JANE) held a seminar on utilizing internship programs for international science and engineering students to address the shortage of talent in Japan's IT, AI, and semiconductor sectors. This initiative is garnering attention as a crucial step for Japanese companies to connect with global technical talent.

Currently, the Japanese IT industry faces a shortage of personnel with advanced expertise, making the acquisition of talent in growth areas such as AI and semiconductors an urgent priority. During the seminar, the practical application of the "Global South – Japan Tech Talent Internship Program," promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), was introduced.

This program supports corporate internationalization and technological innovation by facilitating the placement of outstanding students from emerging nations—collectively known as the Global South—into Japanese companies. By interacting directly with young overseas engineers, companies have the opportunity to gain new perspectives and incorporate new technologies.

JANE intends to continue promoting a proper understanding of digital technology and IT business, supporting the development of Japanese industry through policy proposals and various activities. The utilization of overseas talent is expected to be a key factor in maintaining the global competitiveness of Japan's IT industry.
