U.S. Military Osprey Transport Aircraft Land at Miyako and Ishigaki Airports in Okinawa for the First Time
On the 15th, U.S. military Osprey transport aircraft landed at Miyako Airport and Ishigaki Airport in Okinawa Prefecture. This marks the first time that a U.S. military Osprey has landed at Miyako Airport.
These landings were carried out as part of ongoing joint Japan-U.S. military exercises. The facilities at both airports were utilized for the purpose of these drills. In Okinawa Prefecture, there has long been significant debate regarding the operation, noise, and safety of U.S. military aircraft, and this latest development has drawn considerable attention.
The Sakishima Islands, including Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island, are locations of critical importance to Japan's national defense. The government has expressed its intention to protect regional security by strengthening cooperation between the Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. military. Meanwhile, local residents have voiced anxiety and concern regarding the military use of these airports.
It is possible that other airports and ports within Okinawa Prefecture will continue to be used in connection with future joint Japan-U.S. exercises. Addressing the impact on the daily lives of local residents and ensuring safety measures will be key challenges moving forward.
