Turning the Climate Crisis into an Opportunity for Growth: Health and Global Policy Institute Proposes New Strategy
On June 24, 2026, the Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) released a joint statement regarding the impact of climate change on human health and economic countermeasures to address it. This proposal is based on the concept of "planetary health," which advocates for simultaneously protecting the global environment and maintaining human health.
Currently, health damage caused by climate change has become a serious issue worldwide. HGPI argues that rather than viewing this crisis merely as a problem, a "Japanese-style strategy" is needed to leverage it for new economic growth and social development. The core idea is that strengthening climate measures will, in turn, protect public health and revitalize the economy.
Specifically, the institute is calling for the integration of this planetary health perspective into the government's upcoming "Basic Policies for Economic and Fiscal Management and Reform" and national growth strategies. HGPI analyzes that building an environmentally conscious society will lead to the containment of medical costs and the creation of new industries, representing a significant opportunity for Japan.
This proposal was compiled by experts and volunteer members. Attention is now focused on how the government will respond, and how Japan will address the issues of climate change and health within the international community to build a sustainable society.
