Autonomous bus demonstration project begins on Miyakojima, Okinawa
An autonomous bus service for tourists has launched on Miyakojima in Okinawa Prefecture. This initiative utilizes the latest communication technology, "5G," to propose a new mode of transportation for tourist destinations.
This demonstration project combines a private 5G network with a technology called MEC (Multi-access Edge Computing). By doing so, the project aims to process vehicle data in real-time to achieve safe and smooth autonomous driving.
The primary target is foreign tourists visiting Miyakojima. The main objective is to overcome challenges such as language barriers and a lack of transportation options, making it easier for them to travel comfortably around the tourist destination.
Moving forward, it is hoped that this technology will enhance convenience for tourists and contribute to the revitalization of the local economy. The success of this project on Miyakojima could potentially serve as a catalyst for the widespread adoption of autonomous driving at tourist destinations across Japan in the future.
